To ensure the best match possible, please ensure you have identified which fee option (listed below) you are requesting. Our administrative/reception services are volunteer/student-run and there will be a delay in replying back – so fastest way to connect to services is through the secured online link above.  

NOTE: Our services are intended for those who cannot afford typical private therapy rates (proof may be required) and are not eligible for public services (government-run and government funded direct counselling services within the community). Our counsellors/social workers are typically newer graduates or interns on school practicums therefore if you are looking for experienced (for example 5-plus years) you should instead contact private therapists or direct service providers within the public sector, such as Fraser Health or Vancouver Coastal Health Mental Health and Addiction Services, Ministry of Children and Family Development  (MCFD) Child and Youth Mental Health, School District Counsellors or non-profit agencies in your community that are funded by Health Authorities, Schools Districts or MCFD. Currently all counsellors are only offering services online or by telephone.

Current Language Capacity

(For some languages, there may be limitations in terms of days/times of availability of counsellors, and some may be low fee while others have minimum fees with a private clinical counsellor – please email at counsellor@movingforwardfamilyservices.com to find out about capacity/fees) 

Please note services for children 12 and under require consent to provide counselling from any and all legal guardians – by referring a child you confirm you have obtained consent from any and all legal guardians. 

We provide the following options for counselling:

  • Counselling with a Clinical Counsellor ($50 individual /$65 for couples and families) for those who cannot afford traditional rates and who do not have insurance coverage  (proof of income may be required). There is no wait for this service. If you chose this option, please be advised that services are provided by the Counsellor (not Moving Forward Family Services); we simply provide the referral to the Counsellor. All subsequent correspondence should be with the Counsellor, and any Client-related material is kept by that Counsellor. If you have extended health and/or other coverage, your fees will first be applied to your insurer at standard rates (you can discuss this further with the counsellor). If you choose this option, the counsellor will contact you directly and you can decide if it is a good fit and whether you wish to proceed. NOTE these private therapists reserve only a few spots in their practice for MFFS referrals – and they want to make sure those getting the low fee services truly need it – and cannot afford to pay more.  They may therefore conduct an assessment to determine eligibility for the low fee services. Some may offer in-person services, though may charge more for such requests –  if you choose this option you can discuss this with the counsellor.  Currently these counsellors are only offering services online or by telephone. 

Please note: Moving forward has a network of private registered counsellors who reserve a certain amount of spots in their schedule for lower fee clients, who have no insurance coverage for counselling, referred by Moving Forward Family Services.

To access this service, please fill the online service request form or contact us on our messaging line at (877) 485-5025 and request to see a private counsellor at the $50/$65 couples/families fee option.  You will be required to provide proof of low income and cannot use the subsidized fees for insurance (if you want to use your insurance, higher fees will be charged). Once your request is sent to us, we will match you with an appropriate counsellor depending on what you would like to focus on in your work with a counsellor. You will be able to have a short consultation with the counsellor over the telephone to determine if it is a good fit.  Please note, we do not share the names and contact information of our private registered counsellors as they are only available to provide the low fee $50/$65 option, pending their limited availability, to clients referred by Moving Forward Family Services. 

  • $20 services with fully insured, supervised Interns on practicums for low-income clients.  Current wait times: 4-6 weeks. Note that there may be limited services available on evenings and weekends for this service. Online or phone only.

  • Services for less than $20 with fully insured, supervised Interns on practicums (‘pay what you can’) for anyone who is not employed or works less than full-time hours. 10-12 weeks wait. Note that these services are only available during the weekdays, between 9 am and 4 pm.  Proof of low/no income required for this service. Online or phone only. Up to 4 sessions of free service (with the possibility of extension in consultation with the supervisor) can be provided to those with no income. If you are employed you are not eligible for free services 
  • Our free 12-session CBT coaching program (online or phone).  Offered in English only. Current wait 4-6 weeks. Facilitated by interns. Note: this is a coaching program, based on a curriculum; if wanting to do in-depth work, consider one of the above options in addition to this option. Not suitable if you wish to do intensive therapeutic work. Please review this document for more details about this program: CBT Coaching
  • Our free 8-session Healthy Relationships coaching program (online or phone).  Offered in English only. Offered one-to-one for anyone looking to improve their relationship with their intimate partner. Current wait 4-6 weeks. Facilitated by interns. Note: this is a coaching program, based on a curriculum; if wanting to do in-depth work, consider one of the above options in addition to this option. Not suitable if you wish to do intensive therapeutic work

Missed appointments: A missed appointment without 24 hours advance notice will result in a missed appointment fee and/or may result in discontinuation of services.

For Service Providers

Support our efforts to provide low barrier, affordable/free and timely counselling to your clients by donating to our efforts! While we receive dozens of referrals per week from Health Authorities, probation, MCFD and schools we do not receive any funding from these sources.

Please be advised that we typically make contact with clients within one week of a referral, and will make several attempts to reach the client. If after leaving messages with a referred client we do not hear back from them, we ultimately close the referral. We find quite often referred clients do not follow up with our efforts to contact them.

In the unlikely event that, after one week, the client advises no one has contacted them, please ask them to call or text us.

We offer a menu of services, and no one will be turned away based on their financial circumstances. At the same time, as noted our services are intended for those who cannot afford traditional therapy rates and who may not be eligible or face long waits for funded services (services offered by Health Authority, Ministries, School Districts or funded non-profit counselling programs). Clients can see a clinical counsellor (minimum fees apply) or a supervised, insured intern on practicum. Over time we have found that there were a high number of no shows with clients asking for free services, and thus have asked clients to instead ‘pay what you can’ (though if client insists they cannot pay, we can provide a free service, but expect them to commit to attending for appointments as arranged).

We are committed to reducing barriers to accessing services, and feel with the above outlined methods no client who is truly in need of counselling, and is motivated to access it, would not be able to do so in a timely fashion.
